Surf Drive Beach Nourishment
Location: Surf Drive Beach, Falmouth MA 02540
Applicant: Falmouth Beach Committee
Allocation: $40,000
Year/Article: April STM 2012, A20
In 2012 the erosion of Surf Drive Beach had become so severe that the ocean was entering the Ellen T. Mitchell Beach Department Administration Building during some storm conditions. Aerial photographs taken over the years provided additional graphic proof of how the ocean was advancing its tidal and storm boundaries on the beach. As a result, the Beach Committee requested and was appropriated $40,000 by Town Meeting to restore and shore up, with 2,000 cubic yards of sand, some of the beach lost to erosion. This provided a buffer against future erosion, protected the dunes, and expanded the recreational area available to beach lovers. The project benefited from the use of additional sand produced by the concurrent dredging operation extending from Falmouth Harbor to Surf Drive Beach. The beach restoration was completed in 2013.
